Rare Cancer Thrombus Removed From Heart in Kolkata

Summary

  • A 38-year-old woman's life was saved by doctors in eastern India.
  • A blood clot from a uterine tumor had traveled to her heart.
  • The rare surgery involved removing both the clot and the uterine tumor.

Doctors in eastern India recently performed a first-of-its-kind surgery to remove a blood clot that had traveled from a uterine tumor to a 38-year-old woman's heart. The patient, from North 24 Parganas, suffered from uterine sarcoma extending into the heart, an extremely rare condition affecting less than 1% of gynecological patients worldwide.

The thrombus, containing cancerous cells from a 16.2 cm uterine tumor, had extended into the right atrium of the woman's heart. This posed a critical risk of blocking cardiac arteries, which could have been fatal. The complex operation necessitated a combined effort from multiple surgical teams, including cardiothoracic and gynaecologic oncology specialists.

This double procedure involved laparoscopic surgery to remove the primary uterine tumor and open-heart surgery to extract the clot. The patient was admitted on August 11 and underwent surgery on the same day at Narayana RN Tagore Hospital. Following the successful removal of both the tumor and the thrombus, the woman was discharged on August 18, free of cancer cells.
