New York Confirms Rare Tick-Borne Virus: Bourbon Virus

For the first time, New York has confirmed a case of the Bourbon virus, a rare tick-borne infection. A 67-year-old man in Suffolk County contracted the illness after being bitten by lone star ticks. This virus, named after the Kansas county where it was first identified, currently lacks a vaccine, commercial test, or specific treatments.

Symptoms of Bourbon virus can mimic other tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease, potentially leading to misdiagnosis. The infected individual experienced a rash, fever, and severe headaches, requiring a five-day hospital stay for recovery. Although this case was successfully treated, the Bourbon virus has been confirmed in other states, including Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, where it has been associated with fatalities.

Lone star ticks, the primary carriers of Bourbon virus, are increasingly prevalent in New York and the wider Northeast region. Factors such as exploding white-tailed deer populations and milder winters contribute to tick proliferation and extended activity seasons. These ticks can also transmit other diseases, such as alpha-gal syndrome and ehrlichiosis.

Medical professionals emphasize the need for improved surveillance, testing, and physician guidance regarding Bourbon virus. As no specific cure exists, treatment typically involves managing symptoms with supportive care like IV fluids and medications for fever and pain. Understanding the virus's true impact in high-risk areas is crucial for developing diagnostic tools and effective treatments.
