Rare Bombay Blood Group Kidney Transplant a Success

A groundbreaking kidney transplant has been successfully performed at Jipmer for a 34-year-old patient with the exceptionally rare Bombay blood group. This blood type, found in only one in 50,000 to 100,000 individuals, does not match conventional blood groups and poses significant rejection risks due to anti-H antibodies.

The hospital's Transfusion Medicine Department collaborated with the Puvi Foundation to procure three units of the scarce Bombay blood group from Nashik and Anantapur. As a precautionary measure, an individual with the same rare blood type was brought to the hospital from Karaikal and remained on standby until the surgery concluded.

The complex operation was completed successfully, and the patient's anti-H antibody levels were closely monitored post-transplant. The newly transplanted kidney functioned immediately, and the patient was discharged with normal kidney function. This marks one of only a few reported organ transplants involving the Bombay blood group in India. The procedure was performed at no cost to the patient under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. Jipmer has a robust transplant program, having completed 439 kidney transplants to date, including 15 ABO incompatible transplants.
