Miracle Birth: Rare Blood Disorders Conquered for New Life
20 Jun
Summary
- Woman delivered a healthy baby after managing rare blood disorders.
- Doctors diagnosed overlapping ITP, HELLP, and suspected TTP.
- Patient received extensive transfusions and treatments during recovery.

A remarkable medical achievement occurred when doctors at Mumbai's Grant Government Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals successfully managed a rare combination of blood disorders in a 32-year-old woman from Jalna district. Her pregnancy was considered extremely high-risk due to a history of losing three full-term newborns within days of birth, coupled with undiagnosed bleeding disorders.
Referred to JJ Hospital at 37 weeks, the patient presented with a critically low platelet count of 15,000 per microlitre. Doctors faced a diagnostic challenge with overlapping symptoms suggesting Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), HELLP syndrome, and potentially Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP). Her condition necessitated significant medical intervention.
An emergency caesarean section was performed due to fetal distress. The surgery was complicated by severe hemorrhage, requiring bilateral uterine artery ligation to control bleeding. Despite these challenges, a healthy baby girl was delivered in May 2025. The mother's post-operative period remained critical, marked by hypertension and Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES).
Further investigations and treatments, including numerous blood and platelet transfusions, were administered. The patient eventually improved and was discharged after over a month, with ongoing advice for long-term follow-up with a hematologist to manage her chronic ITP complicated by HELLP syndrome.
