Rapid Weight Loss Wins Over Slow and Steady
15 May
Summary
- Rapid weight loss led to greater initial and sustained weight loss over a year.
- A study compared a 16-week rapid loss plan to a gradual reduction approach.
- Experts suggest rapid loss, when supervised, is an effective obesity treatment.

A recent study presented at the European Congress of Obesity in Turkey suggests that rapid weight loss might be more effective for sustained results than the traditionally advised gradual approach. The research challenges the long-held assumption that slower weight loss is superior for long-term outcomes.
Norwegian researchers analyzed 284 obese adults, dividing them into two programs. One group followed a 16-week rapid weight loss plan with calorie restrictions, while the other group was advised to reduce their daily intake by 1,000 calories.
During the initial 16-week phase, the rapid weight loss group lost an average of 12.9% of their body weight, compared to 8.1% in the gradual group. After a full year, the rapid loss group maintained a 14.4% weight reduction, surpassing the 10.5% of the gradual group.
Authors concluded that structured rapid weight loss programs, when professionally supervised, can be a more effective method for reaching significant body weight targets and reducing obesity-related health risks. Experts noted this adds to growing evidence that rapid loss, delivered safely, is a viable obesity treatment strategy.
