Rajasthan Villages Gain Sight: Project Transforms Eye Care

The Jeevan Jyoti Project has significantly enhanced eye care services in the rural areas of Rajasthan's Alwar district through the establishment of new vision centers. These centers, located within government health facilities, offer timely and effective eye care within the existing public health system. Staffed by trained optometrists, the centers conduct door-to-door screenings to detect conditions such as cataracts and refractive errors early.

Community Health Centres in Ramgarh and Laxmangarh blocks now house these vision centers, providing primary eye screening, refraction services, and dispensing of near-vision glasses at no cost. The project, in collaboration with district administration, ensures each center is equipped with necessary diagnostic instruments. Additionally, transportation is arranged for cataract patients to and from treatment centers.

Community outreach includes six mobilisers conducting screenings and referrals, with approximately 54,000 door-to-door screenings performed. Eye camps have also been organized, reaching 400 villages across the blocks. These efforts have led to a twofold increase in patient footfall at health centers, demonstrating increased community trust and a significant reduction in avoidable blindness.

Beyond adult care, a school eye health program focuses on children in government schools, identifying and correcting vision problems. An inclusive education program further supports visually impaired children with specialized resources. The initiative has improved access to livelihoods and education, fostering dignity among rural populations.
