According to a recent study, Rajasthan is experiencing an alarming surge in cancer cases, with the state's average incidence rate standing at 134.57 cases per 100,000 population—significantly higher than India's national average of 113 cases. The study, based on data from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10, reveals that the highest prevalence of the disease is in the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, and digestive organs.
Jaipur, the state capital, has been identified as the worst-affected city, with 2,837 registered cancer patients, equivalent to 332.24 cases per 100,000 population. Other heavily impacted districts include Alwar, Ajmer, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu. Medico-legal activist Shri Gopal Kabra, who is the Director (Clinical) at Bhagwan Mahaveer Cancer Hospital in Jaipur, attributes the high incidence to lifestyle factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and exposure to pesticides.
The study also highlights the rising incidence of breast and cervical cancer in women, underscoring the urgent need for early detection and treatment. Kabra emphasizes that the comprehensive data analysis will guide policymakers in planning effective interventions to address this escalating public health challenge in Rajasthan.
