Rajasthan Ramps Up Swine Flu Fight

Rajasthan's health department has mandated the creation of dedicated Outpatient Departments (OPDs) across government hospitals to manage suspected cases of swine flu and influenza-like illnesses. This directive comes in response to 104 swine flu cases identified since August 1. The state is also enhancing its screening and testing protocols, including testing 5% of all influenza-like illness cases and every severe acute respiratory infection case.

Patients presenting with cold, cough, and fever at these specialized clinics will undergo screening via pulse oximeters, with diligent record-keeping for follow-up. Hospitals are instructed to maintain sufficient stock of essential medicines like oseltamivir, Viral Transport Media, masks, and PPE kits. High-risk groups, such as pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses, are to receive special attention.

Furthermore, authorities are ensuring ICU beds, ventilators, and critical care equipment are ready and functional, with trained staff available for their use. Free testing will be accessible at medical colleges and district hospitals after a doctor's consultation. Selected viral samples will undergo genome sequencing, and in critical situations, free referrals to higher medical facilities will be facilitated via ambulance services.
