Rabies Returns: Europe Faces Deadly Resurgence

Europe is facing a critical resurgence of rabies, a disease typically eliminated but now making a deadly comeback. The continent recorded its first rabies fatality in over a decade last year, with a man in Romania succumbing to the infection. This event underscores the growing concern over the virus's reemergence, especially as two strains have been identified circulating in Ukraine, Hungary, and Slovakia.

The outbreak's spread is strongly linked to the disruption of crucial vaccination programs in Ukraine, stemming from the conflict that began in early 2022. Researchers noted that armed conflicts have a tangible impact on public health and wildlife, as observed in this case. The virus, thought to be largely controlled, reappeared in Poland in 2021 and saw over 100 cases in Romania in 2025.

While the risk to humans in mainland France is considered low, as stated by the ECDC, vigilance is advised. Infected animals, including dogs and bats, can exhibit subtle symptoms initially, such as restlessness or unusual approachability in bats. Owners are strongly encouraged to maintain up-to-date vaccinations for their pets to prevent further spread of this dangerous disease.
