Rabies PrEP: Simple Shot, Lifesaving Protection

In areas with prevalent stray animals and frequent outdoor play, paediatricians are increasingly endorsing pre-exposure rabies vaccination (PrEP) for children. This proactive measure aims to mitigate the severe consequences of a potential rabies exposure, a disease known for its high fatality rate once symptoms emerge.

The primary benefit of PrEP is the simplification of post-exposure treatment. Should a child receive a bite, vaccinated individuals require fewer injections and crucially, do not need the rabies immunoglobulin, a painful, expensive, and often scarce injection. This significantly reduces panic and logistical hurdles during emergencies, especially in remote locations or late at night.

While not a mandatory vaccine for every child, PrEP is strongly considered for those in high-risk environments. Experts emphasize that this preventive step is a well-studied, safe, and effective way to build early immunity and ensure more manageable and potentially life-saving care in the event of an unexpected animal encounter.
