A recent incident in Huntersville has led to one person and their pet receiving treatment for rabies exposure. On June 6, a coyote found near Monocacy Boulevard tested positive for the rabies virus. Rabies is a preventable but deadly disease. Transmission to humans typically occurs through bites, licks, or scratches from infected animals. Health officials strongly advise against interacting with any wild animals, regardless of their apparent demeanor. Maintaining up-to-date rabies vaccinations for domestic pets is also a critical preventative measure.
Prior to this coyote case, Mecklenburg County had recorded two rabies cases in raccoons and one in a cat in 2026. Last year, the county documented a total of 11 rabies cases.
