Rabid Raccoon Attacks Dog in Lincoln County, Sparking Rabies Scare

On Wednesday, November 15th, 2025, a resident in Lincoln County reported an altercation between a raccoon and their dog on Echo Lane. Lincoln County Animal Services immediately responded to the incident and confirmed that the raccoon had tested positive for rabies.

Fortunately, there was no known exposure to humans, and the dog involved in the altercation was up-to-date on its rabies vaccination. The homeowner had dispatched the raccoon, which was then submitted for testing at the North Carolina State Laboratory on Thursday, November 16th. The positive rabies result was confirmed the same day.
