Punk Band Tackles Menopause Taboo with Powerful New Anthem

In a bold move, the York-based punk trio Knitting Circle is shattering the silence around menopause with their new song "Eggs." Formed in 2023, the band, comprising lead vocalist and bassist Jo Dale, her husband Peter on vocals and guitar, and long-time friend Marc Walker on percussion, is determined to bring this often-taboo topic into the spotlight.

Lead vocalist Jo Dale, who describes herself as a "confident, happy person," found herself grappling with unexpected symptoms during band practice, including hot flushes and brain fog. Inspired by her personal experiences, she penned the song "Eggs," which she calls a "cathartic" way to express her feelings. "Half of the population are going through this at some point in their lives, people need to know about it," she says.

The band's genre of "socially-conscious and urgent post-punk" provides the perfect platform to tackle this important issue. Jo hopes that by sharing her story and the band's music, they can help raise awareness and encourage more open conversations around menopause. "For women to be seen going through this, because we're expected to carry on, society needs to be more supportive of women and menopause," she explains.

With the support of shows like "Riot Women" and public figures openly discussing menopause, Knitting Circle is determined to continue their mission of empowering women and breaking down the stigma surrounding this natural life transition.
