As of September 1, 2026, Punjab's Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY) has funded 12,467 treatments for sepsis and septic shock, totaling Rs 51.58 crore. This highlights a significant healthcare challenge, with severe sepsis accounting for 10,961 treatments worth Rs 44.3 crore, and 1,506 septic shock treatments costing Rs 7.2 crore.
Health Minister Balbir Singh emphasized the importance of early diagnosis, noting that sepsis can escalate quickly. Progression to septic shock involves serious circulatory issues and reduced blood flow to vital organs. Patients in septic shock often require intensive care, including fluids, antibiotics, ventilation, and potentially organ support, leading to high treatment costs.
Pediatric experts pointed out that newborns are particularly at risk. Subtle behavioral changes in infants can be crucial warning signs. Premature and low-birth-weight babies can deteriorate rapidly, with poor feeding, lethargy, and breathing irregularities indicating a need for urgent medical evaluation.
