Punjab's Pind Clinics: Healthcare to Your Village Doorstep
13 Apr
Summary
- Punjab plans to open 1,100 pind clinics initially.
- Each team will cover two clinics daily with tele-consultations.
- Pind clinics aim to provide accessible and affordable rural healthcare.
Punjab's health minister announced plans to establish up to 1,100 'pind clinics' in the initial phase, with a future goal of reaching all 12,500 villages by expanding to 2,500 clinics. These facilities are designed to deliver affordable, accessible, and quality primary healthcare directly to rural communities.
The operational model involves a team comprising an auxiliary nurse midwife or staff nurse and a pharmacist, who will manage two clinics daily. Doctors will provide consultations remotely through video conferencing, overseeing approximately five clinics each via a software-based token system. Patients will receive prescriptions and medicines on-site.
Beyond direct patient care, the pind clinics will engage in community health initiatives, including awareness campaigns and health scheme promotion. This expansion aims to reduce the strain on secondary healthcare systems and enhance public health efforts across the state. However, some critics suggest reviewing existing telemedicine models and filling vacant positions first.
