The Punjab government has launched a vital initiative to enhance critical care in its hospitals by providing intensive care unit (ICU) training to Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) doctors. This program, commencing on February 1st, is designed to bolster the capacity of in-service physicians to manage life-threatening emergencies effectively.
The comprehensive training will focus on core critical care competencies, including essential life-support skills, systematic patient assessment, and managing common ICU emergencies. It is expected to significantly improve clinical decision-making, particularly in district and tertiary-level government facilities where access to specialized intensivists is often limited.
Initially, eight PCMS doctors will undergo training in each cycle, with four at Government Medical College, Patiala, and four at Government Medical College, Amritsar. The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) is seeking nominations, with no training fees charged, though participants or their departments will cover living expenses.
