Punjab reports a grim reality as nearly eight women die from cancer daily, with approximately 2,700 fatalities recorded each year, according to recent data. Over the past five years, the state has witnessed 13,299 women lose their lives to cancer, with breast cancer being the most prevalent cause.
Breast cancer accounts for a significant 56% of these female cancer deaths in Punjab. Cervical and ovarian cancers follow as major contributors to mortality. This trend is also observed in neighboring Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, where breast and cervical cancer deaths have shown an upward trajectory.
Medical professionals express concern over the rising incidence of cancer among younger women, a demographic previously less affected. Factors such as early menstruation and lifestyle choices are cited as potential risk factors. To combat this escalating health challenge, the Union health ministry is implementing nationwide screening programs and establishing new cancer care centers.
