Youths Hooked: Alcohol & Energy Drinks Pose Silent Threat
25 Apr
Summary
- One in six older adolescents have tried alcohol at least once.
- Energy drink consumption is rising, with low awareness of harm.
- Addiction vulnerability increases with age and exposure, but can be managed.

A survey conducted in Pune between January and March 2025 highlighted significant substance use among adolescents aged 13-22. The findings indicate that one in six older adolescents have experimented with alcohol, tobacco, or drugs. Energy drinks were identified as a silent risk due to widespread availability and low awareness of their adverse effects on heart rate and anxiety, despite their popularity during intense study periods.
The study, involving 1,887 participants, revealed that addiction vulnerability escalates with age and exposure. However, it also suggested that enhanced emotional regulation, strong family support, and active school engagement can reduce this risk. Researchers also pointed out that parents often underestimate their children's digital and substance use, viewing energy drinks as performance enhancers rather than potential dangers.
Experts compared the depth of addiction to an iceberg, with initial curiosity or peer pressure leading to more profound issues, including internet addiction. The survey found that easily accessible substances and digital platforms contribute to vulnerability, particularly among older adolescents (17-19 years). Common triggers include peer gatherings and online challenges.
Preventive measures require sustained effort, focusing on teaching impulse management and resilience. High stress levels, lack of family conversations, peer influence, and digital dependence form a complex cycle that fuels addiction. Collective and committed action is crucial for effective prevention.
