An alarming surge in lifestyle-related diseases has been identified among women in Pune, according to recent data from the Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar (SNSP) Abhiyan screening campaign. The campaign, conducted from September 17 to October 2, revealed unusually high rates of hypertension and diabetes, prompting urgent attention from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Screenings showed that 76% of 34,394 women had hypertension, with many cases being severe. Similarly, 72% of 34,678 women were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Officials noted these percentages are unusually high, indicating many women live with undiagnosed conditions for years, often prioritizing family health over their own until diseases progress.
Health officials attribute this crisis to stress, insufficient regular check-ups, and poor dietary habits. The PMC plans targeted awareness drives, especially in lower-income communities, to combat these rising numbers and ensure diagnosed women receive proper follow-up care, aiming to prevent serious complications like stroke and heart disease.
