Monsoon's Damp Grip: UTIs Surge in Pune Children
8 Jul
Summary
- Seasonal spike in childhood UTIs reported due to monsoon dampness.
- Poor hygiene and prolonged wet clothing increase infection risk.
- Prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent kidney complications.

As the monsoon season continues, Pune's paediatricians are noting a significant uptick in childhood urinary tract infections (UTIs). Doctors report increased patient visits this week, with children exhibiting symptoms such as painful urination, frequent urges, fever, and abdominal discomfort.
Factors contributing to this seasonal surge include prolonged dampness from the monsoon, leading children to stay in wet clothing longer. Poor personal hygiene, tight or damp underwear, and insufficient hydration are also identified as major risks. Bacteria, often from the bowel, can more easily enter the urinary tract in these conditions.
Delayed urination and constipation can further exacerbate the risk by preventing the urinary tract from flushing effectively. UTIs are recognized as the third most common bacterial infection in Indian children. Experts stress the importance of prompt medical intervention if symptoms appear to prevent the infection from spreading to the kidneys.
