Pune leprosy cases detected early, zero G2D reported

In a significant public health advancement, Pune district has reported zero newly-diagnosed leprosy patients with Grade 2 Disability (G2D) this year. This success is attributed to early case detection, preventing severe physical impairment. Officials stated that 530 active leprosy patients are currently undergoing treatment in the district.
From April to August 2026, 198 new leprosy cases were identified, including six children and 72 women. To further enhance early detection and prevent transmission, a special campaign is underway from September 16 to October 31. This initiative involves door-to-door screening, focusing on contacts of patients diagnosed within the last five years.
The Maharashtra government has also extended the tenure of 487 temporary posts related to TB and leprosy control programs for six months, ensuring continuity of essential health services across the state, including at specialized hospitals like Dr. Bandorawalla Government Leprosy Hospital.
