Pune has officially approved a proposal to launch a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) immunization program, a significant move for preventive healthcare. This initiative aims to combat cervical cancer by vaccinating girls aged nine to 14 years. The program, facilitated by the Jivika Foundation, will provide vaccines free of charge, supported by corporate social responsibility funds.
The phased rollout is planned over the next two years, beginning with civic schools to ensure accessibility. The Jivika Foundation submitted the proposal on January 19, 2026, aligning with the state government's goal of achieving complete HPV vaccination coverage. This effort positions Pune as one of Maharashtra's first civic bodies to conduct a large-scale HPV vaccination drive with CSR backing.
In the initial phase, an estimated 4,000 girls will receive the vaccine, with further expansion planned. Health officials emphasize that adolescent HPV vaccination is crucial for substantially reducing the future risk of HPV-related cancers. This program is expected to have a long-term positive impact on public health.
