Hospital Urges Advance Booking for ICU Beds Amidst Overcrowding
1 Sep
Summary
- Hospital advises relatives to book ICU beds in advance.
- Daily, five to six patients wait for fully occupied ICU beds.
- Proposal submitted for 60 additional ICU beds and staff.

B J Government Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) is now advising relatives to secure ICU bed availability before bringing critically ill patients. Intensive care units are consistently full, with an average of five to six patients awaiting beds daily. To manage this, the hospital has implemented a helpline for advance registration of ICU bed needs.
This initiative follows an incident where a patient's family alleged a death resulted from hospitalization delays. The hospital stated that all ICU ventilator beds were occupied at the time. SGH handles a significant daily patient volume and receives referrals from multiple districts, straining its infrastructure.
In response to the rising patient load, a proposal has been submitted to the state government to increase ICU capacity by 60 beds and recruit more medical personnel. Hospital administration continues to appeal for prior contact via their helpline to ensure better patient management.
