3 Apr
Summary
- Biomedical waste was found dumped in the open at Aundh District Hospital campus.
- Used injections, syringes, and masks were among the hazardous materials found.
- Officials from both hospitals denied responsibility for the dumped waste.

Biomedical waste, a category of highly hazardous hospital refuse, has been found discarded openly within the Aundh District Hospital (ADH) campus in Pune. The discovery, made on Tuesday, included used injections, syringes, medicine vials, saline bottles, and face masks lying on the ground. This situation has sparked serious concerns regarding public health and safety, particularly as it occurred in an area frequented by patients, children, and the elderly.
Officials from both the District Hospital and the adjacent Chest Hospital have disclaimed responsibility for the waste. Dr. Abhijeet Hosmani, medical superintendent of the Chest Hospital, stated the waste did not appear to originate from their facility and suggested it might be illegally dumped after dark, vowing to investigate and increase surveillance. Similarly, Dr. Nagnath Yempalle, Pune district civil surgeon, has ordered security to enhance monitoring and take action.
This is not the first instance of such dumping on the ADH campus, with previous similar incidents leading to complaints to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) regarding insufficient oversight. The Biomedical Waste Management Rules of 2016 mandate strict handling procedures for all entities generating or managing such waste.
