Heatwave Hits Eyes, Kidneys, Gut: Doctors Warn
10 May
Summary
- Over 229 heatstroke cases and five deaths recorded in the state.
- Doctors note a rise in dry eye cases due to heat-induced tear evaporation.
- Heat affects the gut by reducing blood flow to internal organs.

Hospitals across Pune are reporting a surge in patients experiencing various health problems due to the escalating heatwave. As of May 7, the state has officially documented 229 heatstroke cases, resulting in five fatalities.
Eye complications are on the rise, with doctors attributing this to the combination of dry weather, dust, and intense UV rays. Increased tear evaporation and impaired production are leading to more cases of dry eye, characterized by burning sensations, redness, itchiness, and blurred vision. Medical advice includes following the "20-20-20 rule" and consuming nutrient-rich foods for eye health.
The intense heat also poses challenges for the gastrointestinal system. Reduced blood flow to internal organs, including the gut, to help cool the body can compromise intestinal barrier function and potentially lead to inflammation.
