Pune Heatwave: Night Temps Soar, Risking Health
25 Apr
Summary
- Night temperatures in Pune are rising alarmingly, alongside daytime highs.
- Experts warn of increased heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke.
- Warm nights prevent body recovery, escalating sustained thermal stress risks.

Public health experts in Pune have issued a stark warning regarding the significant rise in night temperatures, which is emerging as a serious concern alongside persistent daytime highs of 39-41°C. This phenomenon is escalating the risk of heat-related illnesses, including potentially fatal heatstroke.
Observatory data from Friday indicated daytime temperatures reaching 39.9°C in Shivajinagar and 41.1°C in Lohegaon. Crucially, early morning minimum temperatures were also high, with readings like 27.5°C in Lohegaon and increased relative humidity contributing to uncomfortable conditions.
According to experts, elevated night temperatures prevent the body from adequately recovering from daytime heat exposure. This sustained thermal stress, often exacerbated by cloud cover trapping heat, can lead to serious health outcomes. Physicians note a recent increase in patients presenting with heat exhaustion, fainting, and, in severe instances, heatstroke.
Medical professionals advise crucial preventive measures such as staying well-hydrated, consuming water with salt and lemon, and incorporating fruits and salads into diets. They also stress the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms like restlessness or signs of heat stroke appear. Avoiding heavy foods that increase body heat is also recommended.
Emergency department heads report seeing a spectrum of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and syncope, with an increase in such cases compared to the previous year. These symptoms are being observed during both day and night, underscoring the pervasive nature of the heat threat.
