Puducherry is poised to significantly enhance its healthcare infrastructure with the upcoming establishment of an Advanced Trauma Care and Organ Transplantation Centre. The Puducherry government has committed to providing 50 acres of land to JIPMER for this ambitious project, which is estimated to cost around ₹1,100 crore. Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would announce the center's establishment during his visit.
Puducherry is rapidly emerging as a national and international health hub, with JIPMER recognized globally for its quality treatment. The government plans to promote the Union Territory as a premier health destination, improving connectivity and healthcare access. The initiative comes at a critical time, as India accounts for a significant portion of global road traffic deaths.
Concerns over rising accident cases in Puducherry were highlighted, with 1,445 accidents reported in 2024, causing 216 deaths and 1,500 injuries. Head injuries are prevalent in trauma cases, affecting predominantly youth aged 14 to 40. To address this, JIPMER launched JAI-HO for public awareness and PRATH-AM for training first responders.
