Pub Bells Ring Early for Cancer Awareness
10 Mar
Summary
- Pubs ring bells early to raise cancer awareness.
- 55% of men diagnosed late for prostate cancer.
- Campaign aims to break stigma and encourage talks.

Greene King pubs have partnered with Macmillan Cancer Support for the "Early Bell" campaign, which saw participating establishments ring their bells earlier than usual. This initiative ran for six days, concluding on Wednesday, March 5th, 2026, as part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. The campaign aimed to raise awareness and prompt crucial conversations about cancer.
Inspirational campaigner Errol McKellar, a prostate cancer survivor, supports the "Early Bell" initiative. Alarmingly, in 2026, only 55% of men in England were diagnosed before prostate cancer spread, a stage where successful treatment is most likely. Early diagnosis is critical for saving lives.
Pubs across Greene King's 1,600 managed estate displayed posters to inform customers about the early bell ringing, encouraging awareness and discussion. McKellar emphasized the need to break down stigma and fear, urging men to talk about potential symptoms and seek medical advice. He likened health checks to MOTs for cars, highlighting the importance of proactive health management.
Andrew Bush from Greene King expressed hope that the "Early Bell" campaign would prompt action, similar to the traditional "last orders" bell. He noted that pubs serve as community hubs for conversations. Macmillan's Support Line offers vital assistance, and the campaign aims to ensure more people can access this help. Anthony Cunliffe, Lead Medical Advisor at Macmillan, stated that prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in UK men, yet many are diagnosed too late. Early diagnosis offers better treatment options and recovery chances.
Throughout March 2026, Greene King pubs across the UK will host charity events to fundraise for Macmillan's Support Line, which provides free, confidential support seven days a week. Further information on Greene King's partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support is available on their website.
