Psychedelics Show Potent Results Against Smoking Addiction
10 Mar
Summary
- Psilocybin dramatically increased smoking abstinence rates over six months.
- A single dose of psilocybin was more effective than nicotine patches.
- This novel approach could offer a breakthrough in addiction treatment.

New research suggests that psychedelics, particularly psilocybin, hold significant potential for transforming addiction treatment, specifically for smoking cessation. A recent trial conducted at Johns Hopkins University demonstrated that individuals receiving a single dose of psilocybin were more than six times as likely to remain abstinent from smoking after six months, compared to those using nicotine patches.
All participants also received cognitive behavioral therapy over 13 weeks. The study's author noted the magnitude of the effect was surprising. These findings, published in JAMA Network Open, involved 82 smokers and highlight a novel approach, as current cessation methods have limited long-term success rates.
