Sunak Urges Men: Get Your Prostate Cancer Check!
18 Mar
Summary
- Former PM calls for vital national prostate cancer screening.
- Men can book subsidised tests for £12.50 this week.
- UK has no national screening, unlike other major cancers.

Rishi Sunak is championing a crucial national prostate cancer screening programme, urging men to participate in testing sessions held nationwide. These sessions offer potentially life-saving checks for a subsidised fee of £12.50, designed to detect early signs of tumours. National Screening Day is approaching, with several events organised for this week to raise awareness and encourage early detection.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, resulting in 12,000 deaths annually. Unlike breast, bowel, and lung cancers, it does not have a national screening programme. This lack of screening means many men are diagnosed late, when treatment is more difficult and survival rates are lower. Advocates argue that a targeted screening programme, initially for high-risk individuals such as black men or those with a family history, could save countless lives.
Current draft guidance from the UK National Screening Committee suggests screening only for men with specific genetic mutations, citing concerns about over-diagnosis of slow-growing tumours. However, a recent review indicated this relied on outdated data. The Health Secretary has the authority to overrule the committee's final recommendation, expected later this month. Men aged 40 and over can find and book testing events via the Prostate Cancer Research website, with booking closing one day in advance.
