A 29-week-old premature infant, Elijah, has been discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Hospital in Bengaluru after a challenging 52-day stay. Born more than 10 weeks early, Elijah required immediate respiratory support, including surfactant therapy and ventilation.
His condition worsened significantly due to bilateral pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum, necessitating chest drains. The infant also suffered two cardiac arrests, from which he was resuscitated with cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Further complications included severe sepsis, acute kidney injury, and pulmonary hypertension.
Elijah's prolonged hospitalization was marked by continuous monitoring and medical interventions led by neonatologist Dr. Edwin Raj Talari. The successful outcome is attributed to the baby's resilience, the family's faith, and the dedication of the NICU team, culminating in his discharge on Thursday.
