Sitting Too Much? Pregnancy Complications May Rise
5 Jun
Summary
- Prolonged sitting over 10 hours daily doubles pregnancy complication risks.
- Complications include gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and preterm birth.
- Simply sitting less and moving more can aid a healthy pregnancy.
Expectant mothers are advised to reconsider prolonged periods of inactivity, as a new study reveals higher odds of pregnancy complications for those who sit extensively. Researchers found that women sitting for over 10 hours daily experienced twice as many adverse pregnancy outcomes, including gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and preterm birth, compared to those with shorter sitting times.
The study, which monitored the activity of 470 pregnant women across West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Iowa, utilized thigh-worn activity monitors. Results indicated that two out of five women sitting for 10 or more hours daily encountered a complication, contrasting with one in five women who sat for about seven hours. These adverse outcomes have become increasingly common over the past two decades.
While vigorous exercise is known to lower risks, the study acknowledges barriers for pregnant women, such as fatigue and nausea. The findings highlight that simply reducing sedentary time and incorporating more movement throughout the day could be a vital strategy for maintaining a healthy pregnancy. Wearable devices or simple phone reminders can prompt pregnant individuals to get up and move periodically.
