Pregnancy High BP: Cut Sitting, Boost Movement!
21 Mar
Summary
- Reducing sitting and increasing light movement lowers high blood pressure risk by 30%.
- Sedentary time and light activity better predict hypertension risk than exercise.
- Sitting over 10 hours or less than 5 hours of light activity raises risk sharply.

Reducing sedentary time and increasing light physical activity during pregnancy can lower the risk of developing high blood pressure complications by nearly 30%. New research presented at the American Heart Association's EPI|Lifestyle Scientific Sessions 2026 found that the balance of sitting and light movement throughout the day is crucial.
Analysis of 470 pregnant women revealed that those who limited sitting to approximately six hours and engaged in about eight hours of light activity daily had an 8% risk of hypertensive disorders, significantly lower than the average. Conversely, sitting more than 10 hours or having less than five hours of light activity substantially increased the risk.
Hypertensive disorders, such as gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, affect 5-10% of pregnancies and are leading causes of maternal and infant illness and death. The study suggests that practical strategies, like breaking up sitting bouts and incorporating short walks, can support healthier pregnancies and potentially long-term cardiovascular health for mothers.
