Jean Phillips-Martinsson established the International Prader-Willi Syndrome Organisation (IPWSO) after her son Anders was diagnosed with the rare genetic disorder. Initially seeking support for her son, she discovered a global community of isolated families.
Phillips-Martinsson, with a background in PR and languages, spearheaded the creation of IPWSO, formally established in 1991 in the Netherlands. She served as its president until 1998, fostering international collaboration among researchers, doctors, and parents.
Under her leadership, IPWSO launched international conferences, disseminated vital information on PWS management, and lobbied for improved genetic testing. The organization also established the first residential care facility for adults with PWS in 1992.
Even after her son Anders passed away in 2019, Phillips-Martinsson continued her involvement, establishing a fund to support IPWSO's work. She remained an active guiding force until her passing, leaving a profound global impact on the PWS community.
