Pools Teeming with Urine, Experts Warn of Alarming Health Risks
17 Aug
Summary
- 40% of American adults admit to peeing in pools
- Pools can contain up to 20 gallons of urine in a 220,000-gallon pool
- Urine reacts with chlorine to form harmful disinfection byproducts

According to a report published on August 17, 2025, pools across the United States are facing a concerning issue - they are teeming with urine. A recent study analyzed water samples from 31 pools and hot tubs, and discovered that a 220,000-gallon pool contained approximately 20 gallons of pee.
The findings are even more alarming when considering that at least 40% of American adults have admitted to urinating in pools. Experts warn that this practice can have serious health consequences. When urine combines with the chlorine and other chemicals in pools, it can form potentially harmful compounds called disinfection byproducts (DBPs). These DBPs can cause skin, eye, and lung irritation, particularly for individuals with underlying respiratory conditions like asthma.
Furthermore, the more organic matter, such as urine, sweat, and poop particles, that enters the pool, the more chloramines are produced. Chloramines can off-gas into the air, leading to that familiar "chlorine" smell and further contributing to health issues. Toxicologists and infectious disease specialists emphasize that while urine itself may not pose a significant infectious risk, the interaction with pool chemicals is a major concern.

Ultimately, the experts recommend that swimmers avoid peeing in the pool, as it is not only a public health issue but also a matter of basic hygiene and respect for others. The message is clear: pools are meant for swimming, not for relieving oneself.
