Federal health officials have issued urgent travel warnings for more than 30 countries due to the increased circulation of polio. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has implemented level 2 travel advisories for 32 nations, urging Americans traveling to these locations to "practice enhanced precautions." This advisory stems from the detection of polio, a highly infectious virus that targets the nervous system and can lead to severe outcomes, including paralysis and death.
Polio has been detected in the past 12 months in several European countries like the UK, Spain, Poland, Germany, and Finland, as well as multiple nations in the Middle East and Africa. The CDC recommends that Americans traveling to any of these 32 countries ensure they are up-to-date on their polio vaccinations and consider a lifetime booster dose. While polio was eradicated in the U.S. in 1979, a case was confirmed in an unvaccinated adult in Rockland County, New York, in 2022, with additional virus traces found in wastewater samples.
The CDC emphasizes the effectiveness of polio vaccines, which have been instrumental in significantly reducing worldwide polio cases since the Global Polio Eradication Initiative launched in 1988. Wild poliovirus remains endemic in only Afghanistan and Pakistan, with experts citing ongoing conflict and mistrust of medicine as contributing factors. Travelers are also advised to practice frequent handwashing to prevent the spread of the virus.
