PMOS: 4x Higher Heart Disease Risk Found
22 Jul
Summary
- Women with PMOS have a fourfold increased risk of heart disease.
- Risk persists even after accounting for obesity and diabetes.
- Study highlights need for early screening and patient awareness.

New research indicates a significantly elevated heart disease risk for women diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PMOS), previously known as PCOS.
A large-scale nationwide study, analyzing data from over 413,000 PMOS patients between 2000 and 2022, found a fourfold higher likelihood of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease events.
This elevated hazard (aHR 4.40) was observed compared to women without PMOS, persisting even after accounting for traditional risk factors such as obesity and diabetes.
The findings underscore a critical need for increased awareness among both healthcare providers and patients regarding this heightened cardiovascular risk. Early screening, counseling, and long-term surveillance are recommended for women with PMOS to implement preventive interventions effectively.
