The opening of a new emergency care building in Plymouth, a £247 million project, is set for spring 2029. University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust has confirmed there are no delays to the planned completion. This new facility is designed to replace the current 50-year-old emergency department at Derriford Hospital.
The project aims to significantly increase capacity, effectively doubling the existing emergency care services available. Following the opening of the new building, the old emergency department will be transformed into a specialized unit for children's emergency care.
While an earlier anticipated completion date was winter 2028, the trust clarified that the 2029 date reflects the operational readiness phase. This includes crucial commissioning, testing, equipment installation, and staff training required before patients can be safely treated in the new environment.
