Study Links Plant Protein to Higher Testosterone
30 Oct
Summary
- Animal protein intake associated with lower testosterone levels.
- Plant protein intake linked to higher testosterone concentrations.
- Study observed associations, not cause and effect.

Research conducted in Finland involving over 2,500 men has explored the relationship between dietary protein sources and testosterone levels. The study found contrasting associations: men with the highest intake of animal protein showed lower testosterone concentrations, whereas those consuming the most plant protein exhibited higher levels.
This research, conducted by the University of Eastern Finland, analyzed data from men aged 42 to 60. Diets were recorded over four days between 1984 and 1989. Higher intake of vegetable-based plant protein was specifically linked to elevated total testosterone.
However, the study's cross-sectional design means it observed associations rather than proving that diet directly causes changes in testosterone. Researchers noted that while the differences were statistically significant, they were relatively small. The findings do not establish that changing to a plant-based diet would definitively raise testosterone levels.
