Summary
- Scientists developed a plant-based treatment for OSMF.
- Cardamom essential oil was converted into a nanoemulsion.
- The treatment offers a safe, affordable alternative to steroids.
A significant advancement in treating oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) has been announced, stemming from the collaborative efforts of CSIR-CIMAP and CSIR-CDRI scientists. They have developed a promising plant-based therapy derived from cardamom essential oil. This innovative treatment works by converting the oil into a nanoemulsion, a formulation enabling its penetration into scarred mouth tissues.
Preclinical results, demonstrated on human cells and OSMF-affected mice, indicate substantial healing capabilities. The cardamom nanoemulsion effectively suppressed inflammation, halted abnormal collagen accumulation, and restored normal tissue structure. This development is particularly important as it presents a safe, non-toxic, and targeted alternative to conventional steroid injections, which carry significant side effects.
OSMF affects over five million people globally, primarily in India and South Asia, leading to severe discomfort and potentially oral cancer. The new therapy holds the promise of a more accessible and affordable treatment option for a widespread condition.
