28 May
Summary
- Severe pregnancy complication placenta accreta caused life-threatening bleeding risk.
- Mother underwent eight-hour surgery and premature birth for her son.
- Charity Family First provided crucial financial and emotional support.

Lauren Farrelly faced a life-threatening complication known as placenta accreta during her second pregnancy. This rare condition, where the placenta attaches abnormally to the uterine muscle, posed a significant risk of severe bleeding during childbirth. Farrelly, who had a standard delivery for her first child, required an eight-hour surgery under general anesthesia after her son Nico was born five weeks premature.
Due to limited on-island facilities, Farrelly was transferred from Jersey to Southampton Hospital for the procedure. The emotional toll of the diagnosis and transfer was immense, with Farrelly describing it as a traumatic experience. She was reunited with her son shortly after waking from surgery, a moment of relief amidst the ordeal.
During their stay in Southampton, the family received invaluable support from the charity Family First. The organization covered essential expenses, including flights and accommodation for their elder daughter to visit, as well as for other family members. This assistance significantly eased the burden on Farrelly and her partner, Dom Beckford.
Family First CEO Cherly Dobel emphasized the charity's mission to support families who must travel off-island for medical treatment for their children. She noted that while approximately 250 families travel annually, the charity supports between 100 to 150, indicating a need for greater awareness and reach. Farrelly's story aims to highlight the critical services Family First provides and encourage more families to seek assistance.
