Philly Blood Supply Drained: Donors Needed Urgently
7 Jan
Summary
- Winter weather and illnesses have reduced blood donations significantly.
- Philly Red Cross supplies are tight, nearing a critical point.
- New Jersey declared a blood emergency with less than two days' supply.

Blood donation centers across the Philadelphia area are urgently appealing for healthy donors as winter weather, widespread illnesses, and the holiday calendar have severely depleted donation levels. The American Red Cross reported that December was particularly challenging, with a surge in seasonal illnesses and colder weather contributing to fewer donations. The timing of major holidays falling mid-week also impacted turnout, leading to what spokesperson Dave Skutnik described as a 'perfect storm' for the region's blood supply.
The impact is visibly evident in donation processing labs, which are quieter than usual due to the slowdown. The Philadelphia Red Cross, which serves approximately three dozen hospitals, stated that while a full blood shortage has not yet occurred, supplies are critically tight, with incoming donations matching outgoing needs. This situation is more acute in New Jersey, where New Jersey Blood Services declared a blood emergency, citing less than a two-day supply in some areas and a significant drop in donations.
New Jersey Blood Services reported a 40% decline in donations, equating to over 10,000 lost donations, presenting a substantial challenge to recover reserves. They emphasize the importance of awareness and encourage appointments, noting that even a social media post can help. To boost donations, the American Red Cross has partnered with Eagles running back Saquon Barkley and is offering a Super Bowl trip drawing incentive through January 25th. The immediate goal, however, remains simple: asking anyone healthy and well to donate blood.
