Philippines Youth Hooked on Dangerous Illegal Vapes

Young individuals in the Philippines are purchasing and using illegal vaping products at alarming rates. A recent consumer study revealed that 58% of individuals aged 19-24 in Southern Mindanao reported vaping, with 61% using these products daily. This widespread use is largely driven by cost, as illegal vapes are often priced at half the cost of legal alternatives.

These unregulated and illicit vaping products pose significant health dangers. They often contain toxic chemicals, such as etomidate, which are especially harmful to young, developing brains and can lead to lung inflammation and other respiratory issues. Beyond personal health, disposable vapes also contribute to environmental pollution and e-waste due to their plastic components and lithium-ion batteries.

In response, authorities are pushing for stronger enforcement against illegal smoking products, with calls for improved data sharing and higher conviction rates for smuggling cases. While some bans on open-pod vapes and refillable liquids have been enacted, illegal sales persist. Increasing awareness of the severe health impacts of vaping is seen as a key strategy to curb both general use and the illegal trade.
