Pharmacists Warn: Weight Loss Medication Demand May Outpace Suitability
27 Jul
Summary
- Surging demand for weight loss treatments, especially among younger adults
- Many more people interested in weight loss jabs than clinically suitable
- Pharmacists call for new regulations to protect patients buying online

The booming demand for weight loss medications may be unsustainable, according to pharmacists. A recent survey by the National Pharmacy Association (NPA) found that 21% of people had attempted to access weight loss treatments in the last year, either online or at a pharmacy. This figure rose to 35% among 16-34-year-olds, despite many of these patients being unlikely to be clinically eligible.
The NPA warns that the growing demand for private and NHS weight loss services highlights the need to ensure these treatments are appropriate for those who want them. NPA chairman Olivier Picard stated that "many more people are interested in getting weight loss jabs than would actually be suitable for treatment." Pharmacists fear that spiraling demand, fueled partly by social media, could lead people to resort to unregulated online suppliers instead of regulated pharmacies.
The NPA is calling for new regulations to protect patients buying weight loss medication online, ensuring a full consultation and review of medical records before prescribing. Pharmacists are well-placed to help roll out weight loss treatments on the NHS, leveraging their expertise in medication and experience delivering these injections as part of a comprehensive care package.
