The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) plans to establish a dedicated transplant centre. This new facility will consolidate existing transplant services, which are currently managed by individual specialized departments, to improve efficiency and patient outcomes. The centre is expected to enhance coordination, reduce delays, and significantly increase the volume of transplant procedures performed.
This initiative will also introduce structured training programs, complete with simulation facilities, to strengthen the capabilities of transplant surgeons. Professor Lal, chief guest at the Indian Society of Transplant Surgeons annual conference 2026, emphasized the nobility and critical importance of transplantation in restoring not just life, but also dignity and hope to patients. He underscored the need for strong surgical fundamentals and unwavering dedication for aspiring transplant surgeons.
Professor Lal also referenced India's historical contribution to transplant surgery, dating back to Sushruta, encouraging a sense of pride and responsibility among modern practitioners. He drew attention to the profound suffering endured by patients undergoing dialysis, contrasting it with the improved quality of life and dignity offered by transplantation. Special recognition was given to transplant coordinators and donor families for their vital, often unseen, contributions to the field.
