PGI Offers Cheaper Alzheimer's Biomarker Test
22 Sep
Summary
- PGI to offer cerebrospinal fluid biomarker test for Alzheimer's.
- Three-test panel priced at Rs 10,000, significantly lower than private labs.
- New programme includes caregiver support and patient registry.
Chandigarh's PGI is set to introduce advanced Alzheimer's diagnostic capabilities within two to three weeks. A specialized biomarker test using cerebrospinal fluid will now be available, addressing limitations of standard MRIs and the high cost of Amyloid-PET scans. This new three-test panel accurately confirms Alzheimer's and differentiates it from other dementias.
The institute will offer this crucial diagnostic panel at Rs 10,000, making it substantially more affordable than private laboratory charges ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000. PGI is also preparing to administer new disease-modifying therapies for early-stage candidates, which can slow progression but come with significant cost and potential side effects.
To enhance patient care and tracking, PGI is applying to establish a centralized patient registry. Recognizing the immense burden on families, the program will significantly bolster caregiver support through specialized counseling, telephonic follow-ups, and educational resources, aiming to alleviate burnout.
