- Patient numbers at PGI have risen significantly over the past decade.
- A new Hospital Information System is being implemented at PGI.

The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGI) in Chandigarh is experiencing an unprecedented influx of patients, prompting 32 departments to request 182 new assistant professor posts. This surge in OPD visitors and admissions, a trend observed over the last decade with patients primarily from Punjab, Chandigarh, and Haryana, has intensified the strain on healthcare services and staff. Departments like internal medicine, paediatrics, and endocrinology are particularly affected by the rising patient numbers and faculty shortages. The endocrinology department, for instance, manages a significant portion of PGI's three million annual patients, addressing a rise in thyroid disorders and diabetes-related cases. In response to the growing demands and to enhance patient care, PGI has operationalized a Hospital Information System at its Sangrur Satellite Centre. This digital framework aims to improve efficiency, transparency, and patient convenience. Plans are underway to replicate this system at the main PGI campus in Chandigarh, incorporating modules for queue management, online registration, and computerized prescriptions to streamline services and reduce wait times for all patients.
