A crucial service providing support to patients after hospital discharge has been renewed, benefiting individuals across Peterborough. Peterborough City Council's cabinet has approved a contract extension with The British Red Cross Society to continue operating the Discharge Support Service from Peterborough City Hospital.
The service, deemed "valuable and impactful" by council assessments, offers up to six weeks of assistance for patients over 18. Support includes help with transportation home, prescription collection, shopping, and referrals to local voluntary organizations.
Councillor Neil Boyce highlighted the service's role in boosting patient independence and well-being. The renewed contract, set to begin following the current one's conclusion on April 30, will run for five years.
This recommissioning is anticipated to yield substantial financial benefits. The service is projected to save between £189,750 and £356,250 annually by reducing costly hospital readmissions.
