Pet obesity is a significant issue in countries like the US and UK, with estimates suggesting a majority of pets are overweight. Owners' perceptions of pet happiness tied to appetite contribute to this problem.
In response, a pilot study in the United States is now exploring GLP-1 drugs, a class including Ozempic and Wegovy, for use in cats. This research focuses on an injectable implant designed to manage feline weight by mimicking hormones that slow digestion and reduce hunger.
This innovative treatment, dubbed MEOW-1, could potentially cost owners less than $100 per month. This offers a more affordable alternative to current practices where veterinarians prescribe human-grade medications off-label at higher prices.
