Perfume's Hidden Danger: Hormone-Disrupting Chemicals Found
15 Feb
Summary
- Popular perfumes may contain chemicals disrupting hormones.
- These chemicals are linked to fertility issues and obesity.
- UK lags in regulating potentially harmful fragrance ingredients.

Many popular perfumes sold in the UK contain ingredients scrutinized for potential endocrine-disrupting effects. These chemicals can interfere with the body's natural hormone system, with studies suggesting links to issues such as hair loss, fertility problems, obesity, diabetes, and cancer. While some potentially dangerous chemicals are banned in the UK, many others remain permitted. The Mail on Sunday investigated ten popular fragrances, finding each contained at least one ingredient examined for hormone-disrupting properties.
Experts are particularly concerned about the impact on the thyroid gland due to its proximity to where perfumes are often sprayed. Campaigners urge government action and consumer caution, highlighting that the UK is significantly behind Europe in controlling these substances. While proving direct links in humans is challenging, animal studies indicate potential risks, especially from cumulative exposure to multiple chemicals. Some perfumes are now formulated to be free of these disruptors, and avoiding products listing 'fragrance' is advised unless specified as phthalate-free.
